A British royal and modern historian, author and broadcaster, Kate is an expert in royal history, constitutional history and social history and has written 10 books, including biographies of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria and the Tudor Queens. The final instalment in her novel trilogy, House of Shadows, was released in July 2018. She studied her undergraduate and PhD at Oxford and has a particular interest in women's history. She is a Professor of History and speaks on history and royal matters all over the world. As well as being CNN's Royal historian and commentator, she appears regularly on British and international TV talking history and politics and she has presented her own BBC shows on Victoria, historic homes and the Versailles of Louis XIV.

Take your flight from a choice of regional airports. Welcome to Nuremberg, a fascinating Bavarian city full of historical landmarks and sights. Included is a two-night stay in luxury accommodation. You will be joined this evening by Kate Williams for a talk & Q&A.
Day2Nuremberg and Bavarian PalacesNuremberg, Germany
Take a sightseeing coach tour of the historic city of Nuremberg, including stops at 900-year-old ramparts, the Justice Palace where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946, as well as the Nazi party rally grounds. Afterwards take a self-guided tour of the World War Two Documentation Centre or enjoy free time in the city centre. You will visit Ehrenberg Palace and Rosenau Palace today with Kate Williams. Both palaces are steeped in associations with Prince Albert and Queen Victoria.
Day3Embark on cruisePassau, Germany
Today embark on your Emerald Waterways luxury river cruise ship, where you will be welcomed by your captain and crew. Passau is known as the "town of three rivers", as it lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers.
Day4Day in PassauPassau, Germany
Cobblestone streets and graceful arcades welcome you in Passau. On this morning's walking tour, stroll through the old town's narrow alleys and see the hilltop Oberhaus Fortress from the town below. Visit St. Stephen's Cathedral, a wonderful example of Baroque architecture and home to Europe's largest church organ with more than 17,000 pipes. Enjoy a traditional English afternoon tea. Tonight, your captain will host the welcome dinner and cocktail reception.
Day5Visit LinzLinz, Austria
Linz, the European capital of culture in 2009 is a lively, modern city with long and eventful history, reflected in the architecture of the city centre with its unique Baroque Hauptplatz. After your tour, you will have time to stroll through the marvelous old quarter of the city or sit in a typical Austrian Coffee House to taste some local specialties.

Day6Visit Melk and DurnsteinMelk, Austria
Located in Austria's wine-growing region, Melk is home to an imposing 900-year-old Benedictine Abbey which features Austria's finest Italian baroque architecture, with its ornate gold leaf walls, 640ft Imperial Corridor and fresco ceilings. The ship then sails through the spectacular Wachau Valley - now declared a Unesco world heritage site - and on to Durnstein, one of the most enchanting villages of the Wachau wine region. This is where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned after returning from the crusades in the 12th century.
Options include a guided biking tour along the Danube River from Melk to Durnstein or a guided hike to Durnstein Castle, and Katie Nicholl will join you today for a book signing.
Day7Dock in ViennaVienna, Austria
Today, you have a choice of either exploring Austria's capital including attractions such as the Opera House, Burgtheater, Spanish Riding School, Town Hall, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Hofburg Imperial Palace. Alternatively, join a guided bike tour.There is also the option of attending an exclusive Viennese concert with music from Mozart and Strauss (extra cost). Katie Nicholl will join you today on a tour of the Sisi Museum in Hofburg Palace.
Day8Day at leisure in ViennaVienna, Austria
Today you will have the day at leisure to explore Austria's capital city or to relax. This evening, the Captain will be delighted to welcome you to the Captain's Farewell Gala Dinner, which will take place while we sail to Budapest. There is also the option of a tour to Bratislava (extra expense).
Day9Explore BudapestBudapest, Hungary
Budapest is Eastern Europe's liveliest and most cosmopolitan city. Enjoy a guided tour of the city sights including the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge linking Buda and Pest or take an exciting hike on the Buda Hill. This evening, enjoy a traditional Hungarian dinner, and complete the evening with a Hungarian folk dancing and music performance on board.
Day10Take your flight homeBudapest, Hungary
After breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to your fellow passengers, then disembark the ship. You will then transfer to Budapest airport for your return flight home.
